Position Description
ACE is seeking an Executive Director with a passion for Alaska conservation who is politically
savvy and has a broad familiarity with environmental issues. S/he will be a strong leader and
manager who will build the organization while honoring its grassroots nature and maintaining its
strong reputation and dedicated staff.
The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated ability to establish a strategic vision,
communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and establish and meet benchmarks over time. A
keen understanding of fundraising and grassroots campaigns, strong writing and editing skills,
and positive energy and a sense of humor required.
History and Background
Alaska Center for the Environment (ACE) is Alaska's largest state-based grassroots conservation
organization, working to enhance Alaskan's quality of life by protecting wild places, fostering
sustainable communities, and promoting recreational opportunities. Founded in 1971, ACE is
known for its commitment to grassroots organizing, community visibility, and solutions-based
approach to issues.
ACE programs work to protect public lands, with a focus on Southcentral Alaska; encourage the
development of sustainable communities; ensure a balanced and sustainable energy supply for
Alaskans; promote conservation of Alaska’s marine environment; and to get Alaska’s kids
outside through the popular Trailside Discovery Camp program.
ACE has 10 full-time, year-round staff and dozens of seasonal staff working on behalf of over
6,000 members, and an annual budget of $1,200,000. Visit www.akcenter.org for more

Key responsibilities include:
1. Fundraising and External Relations
- Lead the implementation of an annual fundraising plan to increase revenues.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, members, foundations,legislators, and the conservation community.
- Have familiarity and demonstrated success with the grant seeking process.
- Raise the public profile of ACE by representing and advocating for the organization.
- Serve as the spokesperson for ACE to the media and general public.
2. Operations Management
- Provide leadership and guidance to the staff and the Board in maintaining existing programs and developing and evaluating new programs.
- Develop and oversee the annual budget and ensure financial integrity by managing fiscal activities and maintaining budget oversight.
- Ensure that ACE complies with all relevant laws, regulations and policies set by the Board.
3. Board Development
- Work closely with the Board to develop the skills of board members and recruit new
- board members who will advance the mission of ACE.
- Work with the Board to adopt policies and programs that support the work of ACE and advance its programs and work.
- Provide the Board with information for effective oversight and decision-making.
- Provide leadership and support to enhance Board members’ efforts to increase revenue and enhance visibility.
4. Staff Development
- Provide overall supervision and opportunities for staff development.
- Implement organizational systems that create a collaborative work environment which values staff input and leadership and attracts diverse and talented individuals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and at least three years professional
experience in a related field.
- Demonstrated success managing, developing, and implementing fundraising plans,
including foundation grant seeking and individual and corporate donor
development.
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic planning.
- Working knowledge of Alaska’s social and political context for ACE’s work preferred.
- Experience with non‐profit financial management and planning.
- Demonstrated success building strategic partnerships and relations.
- Experience with Board relations and development.
- Demonstrated commitment to conservation values.
Salary and Benefits
Salary is $60,000 to $70,000 with health and dental, generous paid vacation, a dynamic,

GIS Analyst
Alaska Center for the Environment (ACE) seeks an energetic and savvy GIS Analyst to
run its in-house GIS shop, the Conservation GIS Center. This position is responsible for
providing GIS support and creating dynamic and visually compelling maps on a wide
variety of Alaska conservation issues. Duties center on management of the GIS shop and
include project development, budget estimates, data management, spatial analysis,
cartography, printing, time management, and billing.
Alaska Center for the Environment is Alaska’s largest membership conservation
organization, working to enhance Alaskans’ quality of life by protecting wild places,
fostering sustainable communities, and promoting recreational opportunities in a fun,
team-spirited workplace. Since 2004, ACE has been home to the Conservation GIS
Center, which provides mapping and spatial analysis for ACE’s programs and to other
conservation organizations throughout Alaska. Maps from the Conservation GIS Center
are used by groups throughout Alaska and the lower 48, appearing in posters, newsletters,
websites, and hearings.
Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, work independently,
and respond to time-sensitive requests. In-depth experience (2-3 years) with a range of
ESRI ArcGIS products required; experience with additional design software (e.g. Adobe
Illustrator) desirable. Familiarity with Alaska GIS data sources and with Alaska
conservation issues helpful.

Join our summer campaign! The Alaska Center for the Environment is now recruiting people for our summer outreach. Learn valuable skills in developing a campaign, grassroots organizing, and fundraising!
We are looking for articulate, energetic activists who are interested in protecting our unique environment. Experience is not required and paid training is offered. The ACE summer outreach campaign works to educate Alaskans on current environmental issues and empowers them to take action in their communities. Pay starting at $10-12 per hour, full time, with part time available.

Lead Guide
Requirements - The Lead Guide must:
- Have prior experience in environmental or adventure education, teaching, child care or other related field.
- Have prior experience leading multi-day wilderness trips.
- Have a current Wilderness First Responder or other advanced first aid certification.
- Have a current watercraft safety certification.
- Have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Be 21 years or over.
Program - Duties Include:
- Maintaining the standards of the American Camping Association.
- Working toward accomplishing the mission and goals of Trailside Discovery Camp and The Alaska Center for the Environment.
- Working with the Assistant Guide, Trips Manager, and Camp Director to provide high quality adventure education experiences to all Trailside Discovery Camp participants.
- Preparing lesson plans and implementing environmental and adventure education programs and activities.
- Supervising participants and ensuring the safety of all staff and campers.
- Transporting participants to areas of activity.
- Coordinating with the Trips Manager and Camp Director for the implementation of logistical plans and transportation schedules.
- Supervising the use and care of all Trailside outdoor equipment.
- Preparing and rationing the food for overnight trips.
- Available to work 40- 60 hours per week
Child Care - Duties Include:
- Recognizing and appropriately responding to hazards and emergencies.
- Maintaining ACA standards for instructor to camper ratios.
- Encouraging the personal and social development of children.
- Observing children and reporting all accidents, significant illnesses, and/or signs of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse to the Camp Director.
Records - Maintain accurate records:
- Update health and attendance records on a daily basis.
- Protect the confidentiality of the participant’s records.
- Fill out all required paperwork as required by the Trips Manager.
Supervision and Support
- The Lead Guide reports to the Trips Manager.
Attendance - The Lead Guide must:
- Be willing to work 40-60 hours per week and is exempt form overtime.
- Attend staff training.
- Attend all trip staff meetings.
- Must complete the entire length of the summer as agreed upon in his/her contract.
- Be prepared to participate in multi-day trips as needed.
Miscellaneous
- The Lead Guide must be willing and prepared to assume other appropriate duties as assigned by the Trips Manager or Camp Director.
- Complete all aspects of contract to receive bonus.
Essential Functions
It is essential that the staff member be able to:
- Assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury).
- Communicate effectively with campers, parents, staff, Trips Manager, and Camp Director.

- Have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Be 18 years or over.
Program - Duties Include:
- Maintaining the standards of the American Camping Association.
- Working toward accomplishing the mission and goals of Trailside Discovery Camp and The Alaska Center for the Environment.
- Working with the Lead Guide, Trips Manager, and Camp Director to provide high quality adventure education experiences to all Trailside Discovery Camp participants.
- Preparing lesson plans and implementing environmental and adventure education programs and activities as needed.

Requirements:
- Have prior experience in environmental education, teaching, child care or other related field.
- Have a valid certification in Adult and Child CPR and First Aid.
- Have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Be 18 years or over.
Program - Duties Include:
- Maintaining the standards of the American Camp Association.
- Working toward accomplishing the mission and goals of Trailside Discovery Camp and The Alaska Center for the Environment.
- Working with the Assistant Environmental Education Instructor, Program Manager, and Camp Director to provide high quality education experiences to all Trailside Discovery Camp participants.
- Preparing lesson plans and implementing environmental education programs and activities.
- Supervising participants and ensuring the safety of all staff and campers.
- Transporting participants to areas of activity.
- Coordinating with the Program Manager and Camp Director for the implementation of logistical plans, and transportation schedules.
- Keeping the curriculum binders and program bins in tact and well organized.
Child Care - Duties Include:

- Observing children and reporting all accidents, significant illnesses, and/or signs of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse to the Camp Director.
- Participating in pre/after care as needed.
