State of Alaska Files for $92M in Exxon Re-Opener Claim
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Alaska Department of Law presented Exxon with a proposed plan to restore shorelines in Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska that still contain oil from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

In 1991, a civil settlement was reached among Exxon, the United States and the State of Alaska for damages to publicly-owned wildlife and wild lands from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. This settlement included a clause entitled "Reopener for Unknown Injury," pursuant to which the state and federal governments may pursue up to $100 million from Exxon between September 2002 and September 2006 for damages to species or natural resources not anticipated at the time of the 1991 settlement. Citizens from Alaska and around the country want Governor Murkowski and President Bush to hold ExxonMobil Corporation accountable for long term harm and unanticipated injury from the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.
