  • Car-pooling and use of alternative transportation reduces use of fossil fuels, which cuts down on air pollution and greenhouse gasses.
  • Recovery and reuse of used oil is beneficial as a secondary energy source and reduces illegal dumping.
  • More used oil (94 million gallons)is dumped on the ground, poured into sewers and tossed into landfills annually in the U.S. than the spill of the Exxon Valdez in Prince William Sound (11 million gallons).
Antifreeze
  • Maintain safe and non-leaking cooling systems in your vehicle.
  • Buy recycled antifreeze.
  • If you have a large fleet, analyze costs of recycling in-house.

  • Impurities can be removed and antifreeze re-used, reducing hazardous waste.
  • Antifreeze is "sweet" tasting and is dangerous to wildlife, pets and humans.

Paint
  • Buy only what you need, use what you buy.
  • Seal lids on used paint cans and use it later, or give it to someone who will.
  • Seal lids on paint cans and donate to local beautification projects.
  • Be careful with lead-based paints.

  • List in Alaska Materials Exchange, 269-7586.
  • Donate to thrift shops, etc.
  • MOA Regional Landfill-Hiland Rd. and Transfer Site, 54th & Juneau take unusable paint for proper disposal.
  • Paint should not be put in landfill.
  • Leftover paint can be used for murals and beautification projects.
  • Hazardous waste produced from paint and paint thinner not disposed of properly will eventually make it into our waterways, to include your drinking water and food chain.
