DO NOT drop off plastics during any other time. All plastic that is left at the recycling center when the bins are closed will be thrown away. This litter only jeopardizes the entire plastics recycling program in Anchorage. |
Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.
Plastic takes up a lot of space in landfills.
The plastics industry uses five of the top six chemicals on USEPA's hazardous manufacturing waste list.
If we recycled just one out of every 10 plastic bottles in the U.S., more than 200 million pounds of plastic could be kept out of landfills annually. |

Plastics can be recycled into carpet, clothing, sleeping bags, plastic lumber (long lasting & does not need painting), park benches, parking barriers, fences, fishing lures etc. |

Bring your own bag.
Instead of buying garbage bags, re-use shopping bags for household trash.
Ask paper carrier not to use plastic sleeves for paper.
Ask dry cleaners to reduce the number of bags they use for your clothes. |
Donate usable bags to the Salvation Army.
Carrs, Fred Meyer & Safeway pay for each bag reused when shopping.
Use them to pick up litter or dog poop on trails.
Public libraries use at check out counters. |

Each year, the U.S. makes enough plastic film to shrink-wrap Texas.
Plastic bags can take 10 -20 years to decompose in cold climates.
Schools receive $1/lb for equipment, supplies and other educational needs. |

Use old newspaper paper or dissolvable starch-based packing peanuts instead of Styrofoam. |
Reuse packing peanuts." Include a note asking recipient to reuse them too.
Your employer's mailroom or warehouse may be able to reuse them.
Take them to mailing stores for reuse. |
