Volunteer Opportunities

Updated: August 16, 2007

Volunteering with ACE is a great way to take action, learn more about a conservation issue that interests you, and to have fun. Volunteer activities at ACE range from a couple hours worth of work, to more time-intensive projects.

Conservation Research

Conservation Research
Are you concerned about an environmental issue and willing to put some time into making a difference on that issue? ACE is up against some formidable opponents on many issues and member involvement is often the key to stopping harmful projects and moving positive solutions forward.

Citizen’s Global Warming Group:
Wed. 12/06/06 at 6pm at ACE – 807 G St #100
Global warming is taking its toll on Alaska and the clock is ticking for us to take action. As policy makers and businesses grapple with the issue on a larger scale, citizens are left wondering: What can we do about the problem? The citizen’s global warming group will meet at ACE once a month to discuss how we as concerned Alaskans can do something about global warming. All are welcome to attend. Questions? Call Clare at 274-3626 or clare@akcenter.org

Research Projects:
With so many industrial and commercial ventures being proposed in Alaska, it is hard to keep up with the background research on these projects. If you have some spare time to conduct internet research and/or make calls, you could play a vital role in providing background information for ACE grassroots activity. Sample Projects include:

Chuitna coal mine
Chickaloon coal proposal
Clear-cuts in the Mat-Su Valley
Knik Bridge research on financing and costs
Chugach Wild Forest Campaign
Cook Inlet Belugas

Hands-On: Get Your Hands Dirty

There is nothing more rewarding than digging in, getting your hands dirty and spending the afternoon making a difference in your community. ACE offers a number of clean-up and recycling projects that allow you to have a positive impact in just a few short hours. Hands-on projects typically take place between May-September. Past projects include, trail repair projects, invasive weed-pulls, liter pick-ups in parks and waterways, beach clean-ups and recycling at events.

Events

One way Alaska Center for the Environment makes a difference is by getting out in the community and bringing people together through celebration. If you enjoy talking with fellow Alaskans about your favorite conservation issues, this is the perfect way to help out.

Volunteer at the State Fair

ACE has retired our state fair booth, but you still have several opportunities to volunteer and get free parking and admission. The Renewable Resources Coalition needs volunteers for the No-Pebble Mine campaign and the Sierra Club needs volunteers to pass out information on global warming and the threat of coal. Also, Green Star is looking for volunteers to recycle. Read below for more info.

Sierra Club

Sierra Club needs volunteers to educate Alaskans about global warming and the threat of coal Fair runs Thursday, August 23 - Monday, September 3.

Volunteer shifts:

Weekdays: Noon- 4pm, 4-7pm and 7-10pm
Weekends/Labor Day: 10-2pm, 2-6pm and 6-10pm

To volunteer, contact Maryellen at 276-4068 or Maryellen@sierraclubalaska.org

Renewable Resources Coalition

The Renewable Resources Coalition (RRC) needs volunteers to educate Alaskans about the impacts of the proposed Pebble Mine on Bristol Bay. Thursday, August 23 through Monday, September 3. You can sign up for a two hours or a full day. Volunteers will get free admission and parking at the Fair.

For more information about Pebble Mine and RRC, go to www.renewableresourcescoalition.org.

To sign up as a volunteer, contact Danny Consenstein at 743.1900, or email at danny@renewableresourcescoalition.org.

Greenstar

Green Star and Valley Community for Recycling Solutions have co-organized recycling at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer as part of our Green Events program each year since 2002. Volunteer as part of a group or as an individual and receive free entry to the fair on that day and a free parking pass for your group.

Contact Jeanne at Jeanne@greenstarinc.org or call 278-7839.

Web Support

The Alaska Center for the Environment website is a critical tool for spreading our conservation message and getting accurate information out to the public. We are currently in the midst of expanding and improving our website and your input on this project will be invaluable. To help out with the website, contact Brook at 274-3650 or brook@akcenter.org
Expand education features on ACE website- perfect for a teacher on summer vacation. We want to develop an environmental education page with tools for students and teachers. This would include hands-on activities for children and teaching tools for educators.

Other

We'd be happy to discuss other ideas you may have if you don't find a project that interests you. Just contact our membership department at 274-3626 or email Clare at clare@akcenter.org.
